NEVER SAY NEVER!

Originally released in 2010 to celebrate The Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Mario and Sonic teamed up for the SECOND time as a follow up to the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games 2008. The Winter Games version featured franchise staples like Mario, Sonic, Knuckles and Bowser duking it out in winter events such as down hill skiing and Ice Hockey.

Who ever thought we would see Sonic and Mario on the same team?

As a person who grew up in the 90's, this team up was something we thought would never happen. Only a few rivalries can say they reached the status Mario and Sonic did. I remember debating with my cousins on who was better, why Super Nintendo was better than Sega Genesis.

An ad from the 1990s. Needless to say, it was pretty heated!
In the early 90's Sonic (under Sega) and Mario (under Nintendo) battled it our for video game supremacy on which console would out sell the other. Sega even beat out the powerhouse Nintendo one Christmas Season by packing in their most popular game, Sonic the Hedgehog with the Sega Genesis. This gained over 50% of that season's market share. Sadly, this would be the only time Sega would have the upper hand as the company, over the past decade, has fallen from grace to a second rate game developer. With still a following of fans and their older Sega consoles such as the Dreamcast and Saturn finding popularity in Retro Video Game circles, Sega has still survived to this day.

This season we thought it fitting to theme our blog to celebrate this classic team up we thought would never happen. Stay tuned as we fine tune the site with more. We thank you for your support of RGCWinnipeg!
