RGCW's 2 on 2 Super Smash Bros. Melee Guidelines

This is going to be our general guidelines for our 2on2 Super Smash Bros. Melee tournaments for RGCWinnipeg. We call them guidelines because the objective of our tournaments is in the spirit of fun rather than a "hardcore" competitive atmosphere, however we understand the importance of general accepted "rules". We ask experienced players help those who may not be as experienced in terms of rules (but you don't have to let them win however).  There may be minor variations on the guidelines depending on the specific event.
We would like to thank Chipdamage and other supporters for their help in developing these guidelines. The majority of these guidelines are taken/modified from Apex.

RGCW'S 2 on 2 Super Smash Bros Melee Guidelines

  • Participants must register either in teams or singles with their names, main characters and a secondary character
  • "Single" registrants will be randomly paired with other "single" participants.

Match Guidelines
  • We will generally run double elimination format tournaments

  • Items are banned during tournament play
  • Stocks are set to 4

  • Life Stealing is allowed
  • Controller ports are selected via RPS (Rock/Paper/Scissors) for first pick, then alternating port picks between teams.
  • Teams may agree to modify certain Set Guidelines (Gentleman's agreement)  i.e. available stages, port selection or rule violation forgiveness. Set "Best of Matches", time limits, stocks may not be modified (for time sake).
  • Matches that time out, winners are decided by remaining stocks

How to Play a Set Guidelines
  1. RPS (Rock, Paper, Scissors) may be used to determine first pick for controller port, with teams then alternating port picks
  2. For the first match, participants must select their main character
  3. Match 1 stage selection is made via "Striking Method" from Neutral Stages. Each team may choose to ban 1 stage for the entire set from the Neutral and Counter Pick stage list. Both teams may agree on a stage from the Neutral Stages for the first match
  4. After the first match, the winners of the previous match may choose to change to their secondary character, but must choose BEFORE their opponents.
  5. The losing team may then choose either their main or secondary character
  6. The losing team then chooses the next stage from the neutral or counter pick stages list (you can not pick a stage you have previously been victorious.
  7. The losing team may also choose to change their controller ports
  8. Steps 4 - 7 are repeated until a team is declared victorious depending on "best of" match guidelines.

Doubles Neutral Stages
Yoshi's Story
Pokemon Stadium
Battlefield
Final Destination
Dream Land

Counter Pick Stage(s)
DK64

Other Rules
Gentleman's agreement (aka Gentle-person's agreement)
Modifications to guidelines may be made if both teams agree to do so (i.e. playable stages, how to play a set guidelines etc...) Players may not change the "best of" set guidelines however.

Striking Method
Each team alternates eliminating stages from neutral stages until 1 stage remains.

Pausing
If you require a game to be paused, you must ask your opponent to pause for you. Accidentally pausing, including attempted Life Stealing may result in a 1 loss stock. This does not apply in sudden interruption or catastrophe.

Coaching
Coaching outside of participants (i.e from onlookers) is prohibited

Again, we note this the purposes of our tournaments is in the spirit of fun. Participants and attendees are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner. Experienced players, please support other players in terms of guidelines (don't have to let them win however). This is NOT a professional competitive atmosphere, guidelines and violations will be dealt with on an as is basis, but we hope to prevent these instances. Thank you for your support and have fun!

This page of guidelines should NOT be considered a legally binding contract in any form. The intent of this guideline is for a generally accepted conduct at RGCW's 2 on 2 Super Smash Melee tournaments. We place more importance on the spirit of fun and respect. Violations of general guidelines or conduct respect will be dealt with accordingly (although we hope it never comes to that). We promote an environment of common decency and respect as we may have children present (please refrain from profanity). The content of this page may be changed at any time without notice. We also feel it is important to note we are a volunteer based group who place importance on "giving back" to the gaming community and charity rather than profit.
